2001 Arctic Cat ZL 800 reverse sounds like its grinding?

I have a 2001 Arctic Cat ZL 800 and the reverse seems like it is slipping and it is making an awful grinding noise when put in reverse. I was just wondering what I could do to fix this problem, whether or not it is an adjustment in the chain case or an adjustment somewhere else. Thank you for any help.|||Syncro. or gear or both can be worn. Need to dissemble and check it out.

  1. I have seen this problem on several arctic cat sleds. The problem is the chain backer is worn out. The reverse idle gear only engages the chain with 2 teeth. When you back up the chain wants to climb over this gear. A small part called the chain backer wears and when there is enough clearance the chain will slip by the reverse idle gear causing a grinding sound. Because of the high forces both inside chain cases I worked on were cracked. Took me a long time to find this problem. Hope this helps. EdT
